5. FOR HOW LONG IS MY FIVE HOUR PRE-LICENSING CERTIFICATE VALID?
Your MV-278 certificate is valid for 1 year from the date of issuance. You must have a valid certificate when you schedule a road test. If your certificate is expired, you cannot schedule a road test. You can take your road test if your certificate is expired as long as your appointment was scheduled while the certificate was valid.
6. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MV-278 AND MV-285?
MV-278 (certificate of completion) is granted to everyone who completes a Five Hour Pre-licensing Course. This certificate of completion is valid for one year from the date of issuance. MV-285 (certificate of completion) is granted to 16 and 17 years of age student drivers when they successfully complete a drivers education course in their high school or college. This certificate of completion is valid for two years from the date of issuance.
7. WHY DO I HAVE TO TAKE THIS COURSE?
The goal of the Department of Motor Vehicles Five Hour Pre-licensing MV-278 Course is to prevent motor vehicle crashes, save lives, and reduce the severity of injuries suffered in crashes.
8. WHEN DO I GET MY CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION MV-278?
At the New York Auto School you will receive your student's certificate of completion MV-278 immediately after the class.
9. IS DEFENSIVE DRIVING THE SAME AS THE FIVE HOUR COURSE?
No, Defensive Driving also known as the Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is a six hour course designed to help lower auto insurance premiums and points from the DMV driving record. A Defensive Driving course is not accepted to take a road test and a Five Hour Course certificate is not accepted for insurance or point reduction.
Five Hour Pre-licensing MV-278 Course
The Five Hour Pre-licensing MV-278 is a DMV-designed classroom-only course required for any driver looking to obtain a New York State Driver's License regardless of applicant's age. Driver's Education Certificate MV-285 holders are exempt from taking this course. For many students, this course is the only formal opportunity to learn the basic rules of the road, safe driving principles, defensive driving skills, and other factors which affect safety while driving.

Effective April 21, 2018 as per the New York State Commissioner of Motor Vehicles:
- Students must present his/her Original Photo Learner Permit to the instructor at the pre-licensing course
- The Original Photo Learner Permit is the only acceptable form of identification.
- All Photo Learner Permits are to be examined by the instructor at the beginning of class, and when issuing a completion certificate, any altered or suspicious permit should be reported to your nearest DMV office.
